From Barcelona to the World:

Global Think‑tank on Liver Disease Makes Headlines and Enters the Scientific Record

Graphic recording of opening remarks and keynotes

We’re no longer asking whether action is needed—we’re showing what that action looks like.  At a pivotal moment like this year, we’ve aligned our efforts globally to put chronic liver disease, particularly due to MASLD/MASH, firmly on the agenda of the upcoming UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs.

– Jeffrey V. Lazarus, Director of the Global Think-tank on Steatotic Liver Disease

Barcelona, 25 June 2025 – What happens when more than 90 researchers, advocates, policymakers, and people with lived experience come together to confront one of the fastest-growing but under-recognized global health challenges? The answer: collective momentum—and now, published recognition.

A newly released summary of the Global Think‑tank on Steatotic Liver Disease Flagship Event, held in Barcelona on 5–6 June 2025, has just been published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe. The article captures the ambition, urgency, and diversity of perspectives that defined the flagship event—and outlines key take-aways for policymakers, practitioners, and the global health community working to advance liver health in the context of non-communicable diseases.

Held under the banner “In Motion, Together,” the Think‑tank served as a platform to build bridges across disciplines—from hepatology and endocrinology to cardiology, primary care, public health, and patient advocacy. One of its most powerful outcomes was the launch of the People-first Liver Charter in Nature Medicine, a Think‑tank–sponsored document co-created with people living with liver disease to call for more inclusive, respectful, and dignified approaches to liver health.

The event and the Charter also captured the attention of the media, with at least 62 media hits across Europe, North America, and Asia. Coverage appeared in prominent outlets, including the likes of The Guardian and La Vanguardia. Together, these stories helped raise the visibility of steatotic liver disease and amplify the voices of those calling for urgent, coordinated action.

The time for connection, innovation, and transformation is now.
