Global momentum builds as position statement on steatotic liver disease published in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology

A Coordinated Signal Across The Globe
The Global Think-tank on Steatotic Liver Disease marks an important milestone in the lead-up to the 79th World Health Assembly, with the publication of a global position statement supporting the adoption of the first-ever resolution on steatotic liver disease (SLD).
Published in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, the statement brings together a broad coalition of voices—endorsed by 55 patient, national, and international organisations worldwide—calling for urgent action to formally recognise SLD within the global noncommunicable disease (NCD) response.

Patients and international organizations endorsing the position statement in support of the World Health Assembly resolution on steatotic liver disease (SLD). NCD, non-communicable disease.
This publication directly builds on the Global Consultations held on 14 and 16 April 2026, which convened stakeholders across policy, clinical care, research, and civil society to explore how the proposed World Health Assembly resolution (EB158/CONF./7) can translate into concrete action at national and local levels.
During these consultations, the forthcoming position statement was highlighted as a key instrument to strengthen global support for the resolution. Its publication now reinforces a growing consensus: SLD—affecting an estimated 1.7 billion people globally—can no longer remain absent from NCD strategies, policies, and health system responses.
The statement underscores three critical priorities:
- Recognition of SLD as a major global health burden, closely linked to metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease
- Integration of liver health into existing NCD frameworks, Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agendas, and primary care systems
- Action through strengthened prevention, early detection, and coordinated policy responses
Together, these elements reflect a broader shift—from fragmented awareness to coordinated global alignment.
The Global Think-tank on Steatotic Liver Disease continues to play a central role in advancing this agenda, connecting science, policy, and lived experience to ensure that liver health is embedded within wider health system responses.
With the World Health Assembly approaching, the focus now turns to sustaining this momentum—translating global endorsement into policy adoption, and policy into practice.
The direction is clear. The opportunity is immediate. The work is underway.
