  • Flagship Event

The Global Think-tank on Steatotic Liver Disease will return to Barcelona on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 May 2027, bringing together leading voices from research, clinical practice, public health, policy and lived experience to advance action on steatotic liver disease (SLD).

Building on the momentum of our 2026 Flagship Event and International Media Workshop, the 2027 meeting will turn attention towards what comes next: translating global commitments into meaningful implementation.

About the event

With the adoption of the World Health Assembly resolution on SLD, the challenge now is to support countries and health systems in moving from commitment to action and monitoring. The 2027 Flagship will contribute to this next phase, with a particular focus on the:

SLD resolution
action plan

Indicators for
monitoring progress

Practical changes across
the continuum of care

Sessions will explore how SLD, including MASLD, MASH and MetALD, can be more effectively integrated into metabolic health, NCD strategies and health systems worldwide.

Opening Remarks & Keynote Addresses

This session examined gaps in the continuum of care for steatotic liver disease and explored how novel technologies, including non-invasive and point-of-care screening/case-finding tools, and integrated care models could improve early detection, access, and long-term management. It highlighted multidisciplinary and community-based approaches and assessed barriers related to the adoption of new technologies, digital literacy, and the social determinants of health.

This session explored opportunities for health systems and policy reform to integrate liver care into broader non-communicable disease strategies and research priorities to support more equitable and sustainable care. The session assessed policy readiness to arrest the rising tide of steatotic liver disease and to meet the increasing demand for treatment and care, including in national policies, clinical guidelines, and strategic frameworks. It further addressed the inclusion of SLD in liver-specific, healthy lifestyle, and NCD policies, as well as policies on key comorbid conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

In this session, we examined the social and economic roots, stigma, and implications for the prevention and treatment of MetALD and ARLD. We further investigated systemic issues such as under-screening, knowledge gaps, and the limited use of non-invasive diagnostic tools, including PEth (phosphatidylethanol), EtG (ethyl glucuronide), EtS (ethyl sulfate), and AUDIT-C (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise).
